Historical Development

The 2S14 was developed as a specialized BTR-70 variant designed to serve as a hit-and-run anti-tank asset for the wheeled portion of Motorized Rifle Divisions, the Naval Infantry, and the Airborne forces. Development took place between 1968 and 1973, during a critical period of Soviet military modernization.

Technical Features

This mobile anti-tank system, built on the proven BTR-70 APC chassis, incorporated several innovative features:

• New lightly armored turret - Purpose-designed for the 85mm gun
• Pepper-pot muzzle brake - Found to be 80% effective in reducing stress on the turret and hull when fired

Operational History

Despite its innovative design and successful integration of the 85mm gun onto a wheeled platform, the 2S14 Zhalo-S faced a critical limitation: the 85mm gun could not penetrate the frontal armor of contemporary tanks, whether hostile or domestic. This fundamental weakness proved insurmountable.

During the same development timeframe (1968-1973), both improved AT-3 Sagger missiles and the new AT-4 Spigot missile system entered production. These guided anti-tank missiles offered superior armor penetration and range, ultimately relegating the 2S14 Zhalo-S to obscurity before it could achieve widespread deployment.
