Historical Background

In the late 1930s, the French army required new military vehicles for different purposes, but normal civilian versions were too complicated and lacked unification for service purposes. Renault started working on simplified versions of trucks for either military or civil use. An interesting solution was presented in early 1940 in the series of AHS 2-ton cargo, AHN 3.5-ton cargo, and AHR 5-ton cargo trucks. However, mass production came too late for the French army. The following year, all series were ordered by the Wehrmacht and remained in mass production until 1944. Due to severe fuel shortages during the war, many of these trucks were equipped with wood gas generators (gazogènes), which converted wood or charcoal into combustible gas to power the engine. This ingenious adaptation allowed vehicles to continue operating when petroleum fuel was unavailable.
