About the Hurricane Mk II D

The Hurricane Mk II D represented a specialized anti-tank variant of the famous Hawker Hurricane, armed with two 40mm Vickers S cannons mounted in underwing pods. This formidable armament made it one of the most heavily-armed single-seat fighters of World War II, specifically designed to destroy enemy tanks and armored vehicles. The large-caliber cannons could penetrate the thinner top and side armor of German and Japanese tanks, making the Mk II D a feared ground-attack platform.

These tank-busting Hurricanes saw extensive action with RAF squadrons in North Africa, where they proved highly effective against Axis armor during the desert campaigns. The type also served in Burma, where it attacked Japanese tanks and fortifications. While the heavy cannon installation reduced speed and maneuverability, the Hurricane Mk II D's rugged construction and devastating firepower made it invaluable for close air support missions.
