About the Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb

The Hurricane Mk IIb represented a significant evolution of Sydney Camm's famous fighter design. First flown on June 11, 1940, this variant featured the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine with two-stage supercharger that dramatically improved performance over earlier models. The Mk IIb was armed with twelve .303 caliber machine guns in the wings, providing devastating firepower against both air and ground targets.

When adapted for ground attack missions with bombs, these aircraft earned the nickname "Hurribomber." The thick wing design allowed for versatile weapons configurations, and bomb racks were eventually designed with chutes for empty casings, allowing the aircraft to retain full armament while carrying ordnance. While the additional weight reduced its effectiveness as a pure fighter, the Hurricane Mk IIb excelled in ground attack roles.

These aircraft saw extensive action during Operation Jubilee (the Dieppe landing) and served with distinction in North Africa and the Far East when equipped with tropical filters. The Mk IIb also operated as a naval variant with hooks for carrier landings, demonstrating the design's remarkable versatility throughout the war.
