About the Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc
The Hurricane Mk IIc represented the pinnacle of Hurricane armament development, replacing the twelve .303 machine guns of the Mk IIb with four powerful 20mm Hispano Mk II cannons. This devastating firepower made the Mk IIc highly effective in ground-attack roles, capable of destroying armored vehicles, locomotives, and fortifications. The cannon-armed Hurricane excelled in the fighter-bomber role, particularly during operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine with two-stage supercharger, the Mk IIc combined reliable performance with exceptional firepower. While its speed couldn't match the latest fighters, its rugged construction, excellent visibility, and heavy armament made it invaluable for ground support missions. The type served with distinction in RAF, Commonwealth, and Polish Air Force squadrons throughout the war.
One of the marking options commemorates the famous "Channel Dash" incident of February 12, 1942, when Hurricane Mk IIc aircraft from 3 Squadron RAF attacked the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenborn as they made their daring daylight run through the English Channel.
