About the P-51B/C Mustang
The P-51B and P-51C Mustang represented a revolutionary leap in fighter aircraft performance when they entered service in 1943. By mating the North American Mustang airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under license by Packard as the V-1650), designers created a fighter with exceptional range, speed, and high-altitude performance. The P-51B/C could escort American bombers all the way to Berlin and back, fundamentally changing the strategic bombing campaign over Europe.
Distinguished by the Malcolm hood canopy (before the bubble canopy of later D variants), the P-51B/C featured four .50 caliber machine guns in the wings and could carry drop tanks for extended range missions. The B variant was built at North American's Inglewood, California plant, while the C variant came from the Dallas, Texas facility—they were essentially identical aircraft from different production lines.
These fighters equipped many of the most successful USAAF fighter groups in Europe, and their pilots achieved remarkable victory tallies against the Luftwaffe. Major James H. Howard, one of the marking options in this kit, earned the Medal of Honor flying a P-51B when he single-handedly defended a formation of B-17 bombers against repeated German fighter attacks on January 11, 1944. Polish pilot Kpt. Jerzy Mencel achieved the rare distinction of shooting down a German Me-262 jet fighter while flying his Mustang III (RAF designation for the P-51B/C).
