About the Sea Hurricane Mk Ib
The Sea Hurricane Mk Ib was the navalised version of the famous Hawker Hurricane fighter, adapted for operations from Royal Navy aircraft carriers. These modifications included an arrestor hook for carrier landings, catapult spools for launch from carrier catapults, and naval radio equipment. The Sea Hurricane played a crucial role in defending Arctic and Malta convoys from Axis air attacks, providing vital fighter cover where land-based aircraft couldn't reach.
During Operation Pedestal in August 1942—the critical convoy mission to relieve Malta—Sea Hurricanes from multiple carriers fought desperately against overwhelming Axis air attacks. Despite heavy losses, these naval fighters helped ensure enough supplies reached Malta to keep the island fortress operational. The Sea Hurricane's rugged construction and reliable Merlin engine made it well-suited for the demanding conditions of carrier operations in harsh maritime environments.
