About the PZL TS-11 Iskra

The PZL TS-11 Iskra (Spark) holds a special place in aviation history as Poland's first indigenously designed and manufactured jet aircraft. Developed in the late 1950s at the PZL-Mielec factory, the Iskra was designed as an advanced jet trainer to prepare Polish Air Force pilots for transition to frontline jet fighters. The aircraft made its first flight in 1960 and entered service in 1963.

The TS-11 featured a distinctive straight-wing design with tip tanks, tandem seating for instructor and student, and was powered by a single SO-1 turbojet engine (a Polish-developed version of the Soviet engine). Its docile handling characteristics and forgiving flight envelope made it an excellent training platform, while its robust construction ensured a long service life.

Over 500 Iskras were produced, serving not only with Poland but also exported to India and other nations. The aircraft remained in Polish Air Force service from 1963 until 2018—an remarkable 55-year operational career. The Iskra also gained fame as the mount of the Polish Air Force aerobatic team "Biało-Czerwone Iskry" (White-Red Sparks), thrilling airshow audiences across Europe with their precision flying displays.

The TS-11 bis DF variant represented an upgraded version with improved avionics and systems, serving into the 21st century before final retirement.
