About the SR-71 Blackbird
The SR-71 Blackbird holds the world absolute speed and altitude records at 2,193 miles per hour and 85,069 feet. A product of Lockheed's Advanced Development Projects Group, the design is a modified tailless delta with a blended forward wing, or chine, that acts as a fixed canard to produce lift and reduce drag at cruising speed. The corrugated wing panels add strength and help dissipate heat, and the all-moving vertical stabilizers are far more effective than conventional rudders. The aircraft is operated by a pilot and a reconnaissance systems officer, and power comes from two Pratt & Whitney J-58 engines. Several aircraft in the Blackbird family were modified to carry the Lockheed D-21 drone on a pylon above the fuselage.
