Historical Significance:

USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was commissioned in 1961 and served as the U.S. Navy's oldest active warship until her decommissioning in 2009. The carrier participated in numerous operations including the Vietnam War, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. As the last oil-powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet, Kitty Hawk represented the pinnacle of conventional carrier design and earned the nickname "Battle Cat" for her combat deployments. She was forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan for many years, serving as the centerpiece of Carrier Strike Group Five.
