Historical Significance

The Cutty Sark is one of the last surviving tea clippers and the fastest ship of her era. Built in 1869 at Dumbarton, Scotland, for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was designed to compete in the lucrative tea trade from China to London. Named after the witch Nannie Dee from Robert Burns' poem 'Tam o' Shanter' (who wore a short shirt, or 'cutty sark' in Scots), the ship became famous for her speed and elegant lines. Though she arrived too late to dominate the tea trade (the Suez Canal opened the same year, favoring steamships), Cutty Sark found success in the wool trade from Australia, where she set numerous speed records. The ship was capable of achieving speeds over 17 knots, making her one of the fastest merchant vessels of her time.
