Historical Significance
The Cutty Sark is one of the last surviving tea clippers and the fastest ship of her era. Built in 1869 at Dumbarton, Scotland, for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was designed to compete in the lucrative tea trade from China to London. Named after the witch Nannie Dee from Robert Burns' poem 'Tam o' Shanter' (who wore a short shirt, or 'cutty sark' in Scots), the ship became famous for her speed and elegant lines. Though she arrived too late to dominate the tea trade (the Suez Canal opened the same year, favoring steamships), Cutty Sark found success in the wool trade from Australia, where she set numerous speed records. After a long career, she was preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, London, where she remains one of Britain's most beloved maritime treasures.
About the Cutty Sark Clipper Ship
The Cutty Sark was a composite construction ship, featuring an iron frame with wooden planking, measuring 212 feet in length with a beam of 36 feet. She displaced 963 tons and could carry up to 1,400 tons of cargo. Rigged as a full-rigged ship with three masts carrying square sails, she had a sail area of approximately 32,000 square feet, giving her exceptional speed in favorable winds. The ship was capable of achieving speeds over 17 knots, making her one of the fastest merchant vessels of her time. Her distinctive clipper bow, sleek hull lines, and towering masts made her instantly recognizable and a symbol of the golden age of sail. The ship's figurehead depicted Nannie Dee in her short shirt, clutching the tail of Tam o' Shanter's horse.
