Historical Significance

The German battleship Bismarck was the lead ship of her class, named after 19th-century German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Commissioned in August 1940, Bismarck represented the pinnacle of German naval engineering with eight 15-inch guns, heavy armor protection, and a top speed of 30 knots. Her fame came from the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941, where she sank the battlecruiser HMS Hood, flagship and pride of the British Royal Navy. Prime Minister Winston Churchill's subsequent order to "Sink the Bismarck" led to a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy that ended with her loss only three days later on May 27, 1941. The dramatic hunt for Bismarck remains one of the most compelling naval stories of World War II.

About the Bismarck-Class Battleship

Displacing over 50,000 tons fully loaded, Bismarck was one of the largest battleships ever built by Germany. She featured eight 15-inch (38cm) SK C/34 guns in four twin turrets, twelve 5.9-inch secondary guns, and extensive anti-aircraft armament. Her armor belt was up to 12.6 inches thick, and she was powered by three steam turbines producing 150,000 shaft horsepower. The ship carried a crew of over 2,200 officers and men and was equipped with four Arado Ar 196 floatplanes for reconnaissance.
