Historical Significance
HMS Warspite was one of five Queen Elizabeth-class battleships built for the Royal Navy during the 1910s and became the most decorated British warship of World War II. Commissioned in 1915, Warspite saw action at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, where despite suffering damage, she continued to fight. During the interwar period, she underwent extensive modernization. In World War II, Warspite participated in numerous major operations including the Second Battle of Narvik, the Battle of Calabria, the Battle of Cape Matapan, the bombardment of Normandy on D-Day, and operations in the Pacific. She earned 15 battle honors, more than any other British warship in history. Her long and distinguished service earned her the affectionate nickname 'The Grand Old Lady.'
About the Queen Elizabeth-Class Battleship
The Queen Elizabeth-class battleships were revolutionary warships that set new standards for battleship design. HMS Warspite displaced 33,000 tons and measured 643 feet in length. Powered by oil-fired boilers driving Parsons steam turbines producing 75,000 shaft horsepower, she could achieve speeds up to 25 knots. Her main armament consisted of eight 15-inch guns in four twin turrets, capable of firing 1,920-pound shells over 20 miles. Secondary armament included twelve 6-inch guns and numerous anti-aircraft weapons added during modernization. The Queen Elizabeth-class pioneered the use of oil fuel instead of coal, providing greater range and operational flexibility. Warspite's thick armor protection, powerful armament, and high speed made her one of the most formidable battleships of her era.
