About the Gee Bee R-1:

The Granville Brothers Gee Bee Model R-1 was the most famous and successful of the Gee Bee racers. Piloted by Jimmy Doolittle, it won the 1932 Thompson Trophy race at an average speed of 252.686 mph, setting a new world landplane speed record. The R-1's radical design philosophy prioritized raw speed, with the massive 800-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine mounted in a compact barrel-shaped fuselage. Though notoriously difficult to fly, the R-1 remains one of aviation history's most iconic racing aircraft.
