    MPM Hobbies 1/48 Scale M-60 900-lb Armor-Piercing Bomb (Set of 2)

Add authentic WWII-era anti-ship and anti-fortification ordnance to your 1/48 scale bomber aircraft models with this detailed 3D printed M-60 900-lb armor-piercing bomb set from MPM Hobbies. Designed to defeat heavily armored naval vessels and reinforced concrete structures, the M-60 represents a specialized class of weapons that brought devastating firepower to strategic bombing campaigns—and now you can recreate that capability with museum-quality detail on your B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and other heavy bomber aircraft.

    Historical Significance

The M-60 900-lb armor-piercing bomb holds a distinguished place in WWII ordnance history as a specialized weapon designed to penetrate the heaviest armor and most robust fortifications. Unlike general-purpose bombs that relied on blast effect, the M-60 was engineered specifically to defeat armored naval craft, reinforced concrete bunkers, and heavy steel construction. These bombs were converted from seacoast artillery shells, utilizing single-piece steel forgings that provided exceptional penetration capability. The M-60 saw extensive use in both the European and Pacific theaters, particularly in attacks against heavily defended targets including battleships, cruisers, submarine pens, and fortified installations.

    Technical Specifications

The M-60's effectiveness stemmed from its robust construction and specialized design. The bomb body was fabricated from converted seacoast artillery shells, with rotating bands sometimes removed during the conversion process. The cases were single-piece steel forgings, providing the structural integrity needed to penetrate armor plate and reinforced concrete before detonation. A truncated tail cone was secured to the bomb base by a locking nut at the top of the fuze body, with four fins or vanes supported by internal box-type struts for stable flight characteristics. The weapon utilized M102 or AN-M102 fuzes, including A1 and A2 modifications, which provided reliable detonation after penetration.

    Modeling Tips

For best results, clean any support material carefully with a sharp hobby knife and test-fit the bomb to your aircraft's bomb bay or external racks before final assembly. Prime the resin with a quality primer designed for resin parts, then paint according to your chosen scheme. Most M-60 armor-piercing bombs were finished in overall olive drab with yellow or white stenciling indicating the armor-piercing designation. Reference photos will help ensure accurate finish and markings for your specific aircraft and time period.
