1/72 Academy SPAD XIII WWI Fighter Model Kit
Build an authentic replica of one of World War I's most legendary fighters with this detailed 1/72 scale plastic model kit from Academy Models. The French-built SPAD XIII dominated the skies over the Western Front and became the mount of choice for many of the war's greatest aces, including American hero Eddie Rickenbacker.
Historical Significance
The SPAD XIII was one of the most famous and successful fighters of World War I. Unlike most aircraft of the era which used rotary engines, the SPAD featured a powerful liquid-cooled inline engine that gave it superior speed and performance. This formidable fighter served with distinction in French, American, British, and Italian air forces, and remained in service for many years after the war ended.

About the SPAD XIII
The SPAD S.XIII entered service in 1917 and quickly became the standard French fighter, eventually equipping 81 squadrons. Powered by a 220hp Hispano-Suiza 8Be engine, the SPAD XIII could reach speeds of 135 mph and climb to 21,815 feet. Armed with twin synchronized Vickers machine guns or optionally a 37mm cannon, it proved to be a deadly adversary. The aircraft's robust construction allowed it to survive damage that would destroy other fighters, making it beloved by pilots. Famous aces who flew the SPAD XIII include René Fonck (France's top ace with 75 victories), Eddie Rickenbacker (America's top ace with 26 victories), and Francesco Baracca (Italy's top ace with 34 victories).
