Historical Significance:
The Sopwith Camel entered service with the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 and quickly became the most effective Allied fighter of World War I, credited with destroying more enemy aircraft than any other Allied type. The aircraft's distinctive hump-shaped fairing over the twin Vickers machine guns gave it the "Camel" nickname. Powered by a rotary engine, the Camel was extremely maneuverable but challenging to fly, demanding skilled pilots. Its unique handling characteristics made it deadly in a dogfight, with legendary aces like Canadian pilot Roy Brown flying Camels. More than 5,400 Sopwith Camels were built, and the type served on the Western Front, in Italy, and with the Royal Navy.
