1/48 AGM-62 Walleye

The 1/48 AGM-62 Walleye set adds detailed Vietnam-era precision ordnance to 1/48 scale attack aircraft models. It is intended for experienced modelers who want to represent the distinctive television-guided glide bomb on a period aircraft.

Historical Background

The AGM-62 Walleye was an unpowered television-guided glide bomb developed by Martin Marietta and used by the United States Armed Forces from the 1960s through the 1990s. It was employed during the Vietnam War against high-value targets such as bridges, bunkers, and command facilities.

A camera in the nose transmitted video to the launching aircraft, allowing the weapons system operator to guide the bomb toward its target. Although designated an air-to-ground missile, the Walleye was a powered-free glide weapon. Its guidance concept can be compared with the later 1/48 GBU-15 Unpowered Glide Bomb.

Preparation and Finishing

Support Removal

Remove the supports carefully with a sharp hobby knife, starting at the tip and working toward the larger connections. Test-fit the weapon to the aircraft pylon before final placement. Cyanoacrylate adhesive can be used for attachment or for filling small imperfections.

Painting

Prime the resin with a primer suitable for resin parts, then use acrylic, lacquer, or enamel paint as appropriate for your chosen finish. Many AGM-62 Walleye weapons were finished in overall white or light gray with a black nose section around the television camera. Reference photographs can help match the aircraft, time period, and markings you are modeling.
