Historical Significance

The Douglas C-54 Skymaster was the military transport version of the civilian DC-4 airliner and became one of the most important cargo aircraft of World War II and the early Cold War. C-54s flew critical supply missions across the Atlantic and Pacific, participated in the Berlin Airlift, and served as VIP transports for high-ranking officials.

The Sacred Cow

One of the most famous C-54s was the "Sacred Cow" (VC-54C serial number 42-107451), which served as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's personal aircraft from 1944 until his death in 1945. It was the first aircraft specifically configured for presidential use and featured a special elevator to accommodate Roosevelt's wheelchair. The Sacred Cow carried FDR to the Yalta Conference in February 1945 and later served Presidents Truman and Eisenhower.
