Historical Significance
The Martin B-26 Marauder earned a controversial reputation early in its service due to a high accident rate during training, earning the nickname "Widowmaker." However, once crews adapted to its high wing loading and fast landing speeds, the B-26 proved to be one of the safest and most effective medium bombers of World War II. By war's end, the Marauder had the lowest loss rate of any American bomber in the European Theater.
About the B-26B Marauder
The Martin B-26B was the most-produced variant of the Marauder, featuring increased wingspan and larger vertical stabilizer compared to earlier models. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines producing 2,000 horsepower each, the B-26B could carry 4,000 pounds of bombs at speeds up to 280 mph. Its heavy defensive armament of up to twelve .50 caliber machine guns made it a formidable opponent for enemy fighters.
Combat Service
B-26 Marauders served with distinction in every theater of World War II, flying over 110,000 sorties in Europe alone. The aircraft excelled at medium-altitude tactical bombing, attacking bridges, railroads, airfields, and troop concentrations. Marauder groups achieved remarkable accuracy and suffered relatively low losses compared to other bomber types.
