Uno de los primeros tanques alemanes, el VK31 (para preservar el secreto del nombre "Leichttraktor" - "tractor ligero"), fue diseñado por dos empresas (Krupp y Rheinmetall).

Entre 1930 y 1932 se probaron dos prototipos de Rheinmetall sobre chasis de “tractor” en el campo de tiro de Kazán de la URSS. Las pruebas arrojaron resultados insatisfactorios y el tanque no se construyó en serie.
