Historical Background:

The first Curtiss Tomahawk fighters to arrive in Britain during the Second World War operated in the tactical reconnaissance role and were deemed unsuitable for fighter sweeps into German-held Europe. Later models incorporated several improvements and saw extensive service with the Western Desert Air Force. The Tomahawk Mk.II, known as the P-40B in American service, featured improved armor protection and self-sealing fuel tanks compared to earlier variants. In the harsh conditions of the North African desert, the Tomahawk proved to be a rugged and reliable fighter, capable of absorbing significant battle damage and continuing to fly. RAF and Commonwealth squadrons operating Tomahawks in the desert became famous for their distinctive shark-mouth nose art, a tradition that continues to this day. While not as fast or maneuverable as some contemporary fighters, the Tomahawk's sturdy construction and heavy armament made it an effective ground-attack aircraft and a valuable asset in the desert campaign.
