The Mk.61 (or AMX Mk.61) 105mm Self-Propelled Howitzer was a French self-propelled artillery piece designed and built during the late 1950s for the French Army. The vehicle had the same suspension as the AMX-13 light tank, providing excellent mobility and reliability. An all-welded box-shaped steel superstructure is mounted to the rear of the vehicle to provide 360° of protection from small arms and shell splinters. The gun compartment has a commander's cupola with a periscope and 360° vision blocks. The cupola also has a ring mount for an external 7.5mm or 7.62mm LMG. The gun compartment also has access hatches at the top and rear. This self-propelled howitzer provided French mechanized units with mobile artillery support, combining firepower with the mobility needed for rapid deployment operations.
