About the P-40C Tomahawk
The Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk was an improved variant of the P-40 series, featuring self-sealing fuel tanks and additional armor protection for the pilot. Powered by the Allison V-1710 engine, the P-40C was rugged, reliable, and capable of absorbing significant battle damage. While not as fast or maneuverable as some contemporary fighters, the P-40's diving speed, firepower, and durability made it an effective combat aircraft when flown using proper tactics.
Flying Tigers Legacy
The P-40C gained legendary status with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), better known as the "Flying Tigers," who defended China against Japanese aggression before America's entry into World War II. Led by Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers painted distinctive shark mouth nose art on their P-40s, creating one of the most iconic images in aviation history. Despite being outnumbered, the Flying Tigers achieved remarkable success against Japanese forces.
Early WWII Service
P-40C Tomahawks served in the critical early months of World War II, defending Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941 attack, fighting in the Philippines, and operating in North Africa with the RAF Desert Air Force. The aircraft proved its worth in ground attack roles and low-altitude combat throughout these campaigns.
