Historical Significance

The Bismarck was the lead ship of her class and one of the largest battleships ever built by Germany. Commissioned in August 1940, she represented the pinnacle of German naval engineering and posed a significant threat to Allied shipping in the Atlantic. On May 18, 1941, Bismarck departed on Operation Rheinübung, her first and only combat mission. On May 27, 1941, after sustaining damage from torpedo bombers and heavy gunfire, the Bismarck was scuttled by her crew in the North Atlantic, ending one of the most dramatic naval chases in history.

Protected by thick armor plating up to 12.6 inches on the main belt and 14.1 inches on the turret faces, Bismarck was designed to withstand punishment from enemy battleships. The ship carried a crew of over 2,200 officers and men and represented Germany's determination to challenge British naval supremacy.
