Historical Background:
The Gloster Gladiator was developed from the Gloster Gauntlet as a private venture and represented both the peak and the end of the biplane fighter. In many air arms it smoothed the transition to monoplane fighters. And when confronting aircraft of its own era, it performed well. The Gladiator entered RAF service in 1937 as the last biplane fighter, featuring an enclosed cockpit, four machine guns, and a more powerful Bristol Mercury engine than its predecessors. Despite being obsolete by the outbreak of World War II, Gladiators saw action in Norway, France, Greece, and most famously in the defense of Malta, where a handful of these fighters became legendary as "Faith, Hope, and Charity." The Mk.II variant featured an improved engine and became the most numerous version. Though outclassed by modern monoplane fighters, the Gladiator's rugged construction and maneuverability made it a capable opponent when flown by skilled pilots.
