About the Hurricane Mk IIc Trop
The Hurricane Mk IIc Tropical variant combined the devastating firepower of four 20mm Hispano cannons with specialized modifications for operations in extreme climates. Fitted with a Vokes tropical air filter beneath the nose, these aircraft were specifically adapted to prevent sand and dust from damaging the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine. This modification was essential for maintaining operational effectiveness in the harsh desert environments of North Africa and the humid, dusty conditions of Burma.
The Mk IIc Trop saw extensive action with RAF and South African Air Force squadrons in the North African campaign, where its heavy cannon armament proved devastating against enemy armor, vehicles, and fortifications. These "Hurribombers" could carry bombs in addition to their cannon armament, making them versatile ground-attack platforms. The type also served with distinction in the Burma campaign, supporting Allied operations against Japanese forces in challenging tropical conditions.
The MacRobert Fighter marking option commemorates one of the famous aircraft funded by Lady MacRobert in memory of her three sons, all of whom died in RAF service during the war.
