Historical Background:

The M7 Priest was one of the most successful self-propelled artillery pieces of World War II, combining the proven M3 Lee/Grant tank chassis with the excellent 105mm M2A1 howitzer. Nicknamed the "Priest" by British forces due to the pulpit-like machine gun mount that resembled a preacher's pulpit, the M7 provided mobile, protected artillery support for armored and mechanized infantry units. The open-topped fighting compartment allowed for excellent visibility and rapid ammunition handling, though it left the crew vulnerable to air bursts and small arms fire. Over 4,000 M7 Priests were produced during the war, serving with distinction in North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe, and the Pacific. The vehicle proved so successful that it continued in service through the Korean War and remained in use with some armies into the 1970s. Its combination of mobility, firepower, and reliability made it an essential component of Allied combined arms operations.
