1/72 ACE Models AF-2S/3S Guardian (Killer) U.S. Navy Anti-Submarine Aircraft

The ACE Models 1/72 scale AF-2S/3S Guardian (Killer) is a highly detailed plastic model kit of the Grumman AF Guardian, the U.S. Navy's first purpose-built anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The Guardian operated in a unique hunter-killer team concept, with the AF-2S "Hunter" variant detecting submarines and the AF-3S "Killer" variant attacking them. This kit represents the attack variant, equipped with torpedoes, depth charges, and other anti-submarine weapons that made it a formidable submarine hunter during the early Cold War.

  • Detailed Molding: Crisp panel lines, accurate cockpit, and realistic landing gear
  • Killer Variant: Represents the AF-2S/3S attack configuration with weapons bay
  • Carrier-Based Design: Features folding wings and arresting hook for carrier operations
  • Anti-Submarine Armament: Includes torpedoes, depth charges, and weapons pylons

About the AF Guardian:

The Grumman AF Guardian entered U.S. Navy service in 1950 as the first aircraft specifically designed for carrier-based anti-submarine warfare. The Guardian pioneered the hunter-killer concept, operating in two-plane teams where the AF-2W "Hunter" variant carried radar and detection equipment to locate submarines, while the AF-2S/3S "Killer" variant carried the weapons to destroy them. The Killer variant featured a large internal weapons bay that could accommodate torpedoes, depth charges, mines, or rockets. Powered by the reliable Prumman R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the Guardian could loiter for extended periods over suspected submarine locations. The aircraft saw extensive service during the Korean War, protecting carrier task forces and conducting anti-submarine patrols. With its distinctive profile, folding wings for carrier storage, and specialized mission equipment, the AF Guardian represented a significant advancement in naval aviation and anti-submarine warfare capabilities during the critical early Cold War period.
