About the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator

The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was the U.S. Navy's first all-metal, monoplane torpedo bomber and one of the most advanced aircraft of its type when introduced in the late 1930s. During the pre-war period, TBD-1s wore colorful squadron markings that made them some of the most visually striking aircraft in naval aviation. VT-6 and VS-71 were among the squadrons that operated these aircraft during this peacetime era, displaying the elaborate color schemes that characterized U.S. Navy aircraft before World War II. VT-6 would later gain fame at the Battle of Midway.
