AW-101 Merlin is a medium-heavy multirole helicopter developed by AgustaWestland (now Leonardo) in collaboration with Westland Helicopters. It was designed and developed based on requirements from both the British Royal Navy and the Italian Navy to replace the now-obsolete SH-3D "Sea King." Entering service in the early 2000s, its primary role is that of an embarked anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. However, due to its operational flexibility, it is also well-suited, in its various configurations, for troop transport, maritime search and rescue (SAR), as well as combat SAR (CSAR) missions. It is capable of operating in extreme weather conditions and across all operational environments. Powered by three turbines, the Merlin reaches a maximum speed of 310 km/h and has an operational range exceeding 1,350 km.
